The western world was once not much better than India if not worse

The 5th Century

Story about St. Agnes throws light into the culture of Rome in that period. Born in year 292, she was probably very attractive and also came from a rich family. She was accused of being a Christian when she refused her hand in marriage. She declines all marriage offers as she had chosen a heavenly spouse who could not be seen with mortal eyes (referring to Jesus). The Judges forced her to offer incense to god Jupiter or the goddess Minerva. For Agnes these were false gods and hence she refused. The judges then show her tools of torture to frighten her even fire was used. When these were ineffective the judges ordered her to be taken to the public brothel where all were at liberty to abuse her. A youth was supposedly struck by lightning when he approached her. Eventually, judges ordered her execution ans she was beheaded. This was in the year 304 or 305 when she was 12 or 13 years old.

She was burried close to Rome on Nomentan Road (Via Nmentana), where a basillica was built in her honor by Constantine about year 350.

Mohammed is often accused of having married a 11 year old. But if this story is to be believed, it seems this was common during the those times.

In India it wouldn't be surprising if such events get reported even today.
