Stamps from around the world - India

I found an old diary of my sister at home. It's has her collection of stamps from around the world. Thought of sharing with those interested.

After scanning these pages, I feel a desire to know a little more about these stamps. I hope to add some to my blog pages too. Scroll down to learn more:

Darul Uloom Deoband

Darul Uloom Deoband is an Islamic school  in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It's foundation was laid down in May 1866 beneath a pomegranate tree by Maulana Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi who was suppsedly inspired to do so by a dream in which Muhammad spoke to him. A large group of scholars at the Darul Uloom Deoband had opposed the  Partition of British India into Muslim and non-Muslim sections.Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani was one of the scholars who opposed the idea of Pakistan. He said: "All should endeavour jointly for such a democratic government in which Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and Parsis are included. Such a freedom is in accordance with Islam." The school advocates the orthodox authentic version of Islam and has repeatedly distanced itself from religious extremism.  It has been suggested that the real reason for their opposition to partition was their desire to Islamize all of India.

Over 18,000 graduates have gone on to found many similar mandrasas across South Asia and further afield. It is known to be the largest and biggest Islamic Seminary to attract students from all over the world. Many Islamic schools in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan—and more recently in Afghanistan, the United Kingdom, the United States, South Africa and other parts of the world— are affiliated with or theologically linked to Darul 'Uloom Deoband.

Ghats of Varanasi

Ghats are the steps leading to the bank of a river. Varanasi has about a 100 of them many of them built by the Marathas. Most of them are used for bathing while some are used as cremation sites. Many are also privately owned, while some are associated with legends and mythology. Perhaps the popularity of these ghats among the hindus for use in various traditions served to popularise these ghats as tourist attractions. The stamps probably served as an advertisement.

Forts of India

I am not sure which forts are shown but if it's Murud-Janjira then it's one interesting fort which everyone on the planet must visit.
