Devil is Real - A real life story

Martin married Mercy and takes her to his parental home, a home that is built on a rocky farm hilltop, one that overlooks a church beneath the hill.

Martin wants to show his newly-wed wife his farm. He takes Mercy on a stroll the following day. He leads the way and Mercy follows him. Suddenly, something heavy - like a coconut - falls on Mercy's head. She turns around and looks skyward but finds no big tree from where a fruit could fall. Neither does she find anything on the ground. Though she is in good pain, she feels that she might have just imagined things and does not talk about it to her husband. She does not want to make him feel that she is crazy.

Mercy comes from a family that is poor. Her father is a daily laborer and had managed to give her Rs 30,000 in cash and about 10 grams of gold to help her settle down in her new life. She had no options to return back to her family incase of troubles in the family where she was given in marriage. She must face life on her own from now on. She could no longer depend on those who had taken care of her thus far. Life did not have the best of what Mercy could have wished for.

Mercy was often thrown off the bed she would sleep. Her bed would shake for no reason and she would fall. However, she must catch some sleep and she would simply climb back on to the bed and sleep again. She did this as many times as she was flung off her bed.

Now, there are bird cages and shelter for animals in the new home Mercy has arrived. However, to her surprise all were left unused. She tells her husband that they could buy some hen and a cow, so they could have egg and milk at home. Hens are bought, and one cage gets filled. However, the next morning all are found dead. A goat is bought and it dies the following day. A cow is bought and that too does not survive to see the morning sun the next day. Martin, tells her that they cannot risk any more money on domestic animals.

Mercy is now six months pregnant and has stopped going to the church. She would resume only after the delivery. She can still listen to the Sunday service at the church which is not very far from their house. However, she now discovers more about the haunted house she lives in. Her father-in-law is a man who is bedridden since ages. He is paralyzed from the left side of his body. However, every Sunday when communion is served at the church below, he rises up from his from his bed with no aid, he pulls out all garment on his body and throws them away. Standing naked and shaking thoroughly he shouts to his wife, "There is a big fat hen in the cage. Bring her to me I want to drink it's blood".

The first time this happened, Mercy told her husband and mother-in-law about it when they returned from church. However, her mother-in-law declared her as insane and asks her son to ignore her. Martin also responded on similar lines and asks her not to speak thus anymore.

One night, as she is still pregnant, she is again thrown out of her bed. She has got used to it now, but this night she was sweating profusely. She could not bear the heat. Mercy goes out of the house and sits on some rocks nearby. Martin finds her missing on her bed and finds her sitting on the rocks. He gets angry and pulls her in by grabbing her hair. He handles her roughly and is not pleasant with his words either. Everytime he's angry on Mercy it appears to Mercy as if his whole face has become red and it appears covered in blood. It has happened several times in the past but today she picks courage and tells him what made her go out and sit on the rocks. She tells him that she cannot just stay inside anymore. She pleads that he understand her and allow her to relax a bit.

Martin shows compassion. He tells her that he is aware of everything that goes on at his home. He tells her that he is aware of his father's behavior on Sunday's at communion time in the church. He tells her that not only animals but even humans do not get to live a normal life at their farm. He tells that it all started when his father engaged in black magic when he was having property boundary issue with the neighbors. He had got some Hindu priests involved and had buried heads of four cocks in all four directions on the farm. This had somehow backfired on him and his family. It was for this reason that he didn't want her to sit outside in the dark.

Martin has four sisters who all havw troubles in their married life. The young daughter of one of the sisters went out one day and returned with her senses lost. She told people that she saw some man covered in thick hair. She has not regained her senses even unto this date. Martin tells her that all such things will not be believed by the outside world and that their entire family will be called mad if they even speak of such things outside the family.

Listening to all this Mercy is worried, worried for she is carrying and would soon have a new baby born into the family. She calls the church priests home to help them ward off evil spirits. The priests come and tell them that their house is under the spell of some deity. They are asked to leave the house immediately as blessing their house is beyond their capacity. They tell them that no human should ever live there until the ill effects are dealt with. Martin's father passed away a few years back. But the family refuses to leave their ancestral home.

This story is narrated in a family court where Martin and Mercy have come for divorce. Martin's child is born as a child with special needs. Mercy want to move to a new location and start life afresh with her husband. However, Martin does not want to do likewise. As per Mercy even his sisters influence his decisions and does not want him to move out with her. They have now decided to go ahead with separation. Mercy want's Martin to provide for them (her and their child).

Both husband an wife have given testimonies to the above story at the court. In India, however, not much investigations happen. These stories are believed with the bottom-line belief that the separation is demanded based on the believes the couple have. I am sure this story must have many accepting to believe that Devil is real. If that can be believed, I am sure people will have no trouble in believing in God as well.

Character names have been changed in the above narration to protect individual identities.
